Infrastructure
FACILITIES
Thermal power station with nominal power 2.5 MWth for electricity and heat generation
The power plant is being used for educational purposes as well as for the assessment of various types of additives into light oil (Diesel) and heavy oil with the main aim of improving the procedure of combustion, which has a direct effect on reducing emissions.
Test field of central heating boilers
The facility is suitable for testing central heating boilers fed with solid, liquid or gas fuel with maximum nominal heat output up to 400 kW. The scope of the boiler test field is the control of central heating boilers with the scope of providing the EC type Examination Certificate as well as the provision of the Certificate of Conformity. The control-Laboratory operates according to European norms EN 45001, EN 45011.
Two fluidised bed installations
The installations of fluidised beds in the Laboratory (one of which is an Atmospheric Circulating Fluidised Bed Combustor (ACFBC) with 150kW of power and the other an Atmospheric Bubbling Fluidised Bed (ABFB) of laboratory-scale) are being used for the research and assessment of this combustion technology. What is offered among others is the possibility for combustion of low quality peripheral deposits that are nowadays not taken advantage of as well as their combustion in combination with non-conventional fuels like biomass and domestic waste.
A PEM Fuel Cell
Fuel cell installation of 2 kW (Roller Pac Portable Generator Set, Axane Fuel Cell)
COMPUTATIONAL TOOLS
ENBIPRO
The cycle calculations have been performed using the thermodynamic cycle calculation software ENBIPRO (ENergie-BIllanz-PROgram), a powerful tool for heat and mass balance solving of complex thermodynamic circuits, calculation of efficiency, exergetic and exergoeconomic analysis of power plants. The software code models all pieces of equipment that usually appear in power plant installations and can accurately calculate all thermodynamic properties (temperature, pressure, enthalpy) at each node of the thermodynamic circuit, power consumption of each component, flue gas composition etc. The code has proven its validity by accurately simulating a large number of power plants and through comparison of the results with other commercial software.

Unit of measurements
The Laboratory has considerable measurement equipment for supporting activities taking place. In specific, for the supply of services by the Laboratory of Steam Boilers and Thermal Plants in the framework of its function as Laboratory Unit of Services Supply - which concerns the performance of product testing and control, like the certification of central heating boilers, the assessment of various types of combustion improvements and the control of combustion systems - a modern measurement unit is being used for analysing the formation of the combustion gases which includes:
- Gas analysers [O2, CO2, CO, SO2, N2O, CxHy, NO, NO2 & NOx].
- Gas chromatographs for measurements of permanent gasses[Η2, Ο2, CH4, CO, CO2], heavy and light hydrocarbons.
- Apparatus for the measurement of the level of soot.
- Arrangement of apparatus for gravimetric determination of dust load. The basic principle of this method is the isokinetic sampling of a dust-loaded gas flow and the gravimetric determination of the mass of the dust relative to time and gas volume.
- Apparatus for measuring the acid dew point of the combustion gas.
